In the kitchen of a Zen Center I used to frequent in upstate New York, there was a photograph of a plate being wiped clean by a piece of bread. The plate was so clean you could have placed it back on the shelf. The caption below the photograph read, “Not one scrap wasted.”
If you waste even one scrap of food, what else are you willing to waste? I think caring for even the smallest things in life teaches us to care for the greatest.
